Projections made by Frost and Sullivan, world leaders in growth consultancy, predict that B2B ecommerce will hit $12 trillion in worldwide sales by 2020, a growth rate of nearly 400%, from $5.5 trillion in 2012.
B2B ecommerce is clearly growing and set to outpace B2C at it's current rate, but many companies are still in the fledgling stages of developing their ecommerce operations. 83% of B2B sellers are either in the process of upgrading/implementing their ecommerce suite or planning to do so within six months, according to a Forrester/Accenture/hybris Study.
The effects of buyers' consumer experiences are influencing the growth of B2B and disrupting the traditional B2B structures with B2C expectations. Many of the same issues that effect B2C etailers hold sway with B2B buyers, i.e. 80% of buyers noted the importance of trust elements and credible product details as well as an easy-to-use website. Nearly a third of B2B buyers now start their journey on the supplier's website, while a quarter start with a search engine.
